  17. SCIENTIFIC RESULTS TAINTED

  24. when the government is the paymaster and scientists are the 
  25. pipers.

  29. According to a recent survey, scientists believe that government- 
  30. sponsored research is often skewed to "meet pre-established 
  31. standards." Six of 10 scientists expressed "definite concern over 
  32. the way various levels of government use scientific research in 
  33. determining public policy," according to a survey sponsored by 
  34. the Advancement of Sound Science Coalition of Washington. (See 
  35. *The Spotlight*, Oct. 31.)
  36.  
  37. If the survey results don't worry you, they should, particularly 
  38. if you are an advocate of freedom of choice in matters of health. 
  39. The government is establishing and implementing policies on 
  40. health based on suspect research.
  41.  
  42. Why do such a thing? To make you and me think that an honest 
  43. scientific effort was put forth to uncover hidden answers to 
  44. important problems that concern us. Unfortunately, it isn't only 
  45. governmental officials and agencies who dictate study results.
  46.  
  47. This is why we must look through the research results with an X- 
  48. ray eye to the agency, foundation or company sponsoring the 
  49. research to see how it could benefit from rigged findings.

  51.              -+- Special Interest Pressure -+-
  52.  
  53. Beyond government bureaus, private foundations and companies 
  54. which sponsor research are special interest groups which exert 
  55. pressure on legislators. These vested interests -- the mammoth 
  56. prescription drug cartel, for example -- have much to lose if 
  57. unpatentable, low-cost, nutritional supplements slice into the 
  58. vast market for pharmaceuticals, as tryptophan did in the market 
  59. for tranquilizers.

  61. You know what happened to tryptophan. After three years, the 
  62. federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still "looking into 
  63. the matter." The tryptophan that caused deaths and illness was 
  64. proved to be from one company source and contaminated. That is an 
  65. established fact. Medical doctors can prescribe tryptophan and 
  66. it's helpful to patients, rather than harmful, but you can't buy 
  67. it in health food stores. Obviously, physicians wave a magic wand 
  68. over tryptophan.

  70. Special interest groups not only pressure legislators directly, 
  71. they do it indirectly through research-sponsoring government 
  72. agencies and private foundations which dispense funding for 
  73. research.
  74.  
  75. Funding is further controlled by committees called "peer review 
  76. groups," which supposedly review research proposals objectively 
  77. on their merit. "Supposedly" is the right word, because peer 
  78. review groups usually make sure research is directed into 
  79. familiar and, to them, acceptable channels so that no boat- 
  80. rocking discoveries will be made.

  82. Remember that the American Cancer Society (ACS) was founded in 
  83. 1913 to be dissolved when a cure for cancer was discovered. How 
  84. is it that the ACS and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), with 
  85. increasing funding, researchers and total personnel each year, 
  86. are losing the war against cancer and we are being milked -- or 
  87. is it bilked? -- to finance them through taxes and private 
  88. donations?

  92. Why did two Nobel Prize winners -- the late Dr. Linus Pauling and 
  93. Dr. Albert Szent Gyorgi -- face turndown after turndown on 
  94. research proposal after research proposal, just because they were 
  95. probing in areas that didn't meet the approval of peer review 
  96. groups?

  98. Then there is the case of Dr. Stanley B. Prusiner, a neurologist 
  99. and biochemist at the University of California at San Francisco, 
  100. who recently won the prestigious Albert Lasker Medical Research 
  101. Award.
  102.  
  103. How prestigious? Over the past 47 years, 51 scientists who won 
  104. this award later won the Nobel Prize for the same work.
  105.  
  106. This didn't come easily. Dr. Prusiner was humiliated for years 
  107. because his findings were not mainstream, not consistent with 
  108. current knowledge. Why? First, because he investigated an 
  109. unpopular subject: a mysterious disease that killed sheep in 
  110. England, and New Guinea natives, cannibals who ate the brains of 
  111. their enemies.

  113. Second, his findings were offbeat. The cause of death which he 
  114. discovered defied conventional wisdom. It was a protein particle 
  115. which he claimed reproduced without genes. This not only shocked 
  116. his peers, it lost him a foundation grant.
  117.  
  118. That's the penalty for scientific heresy -- for daring to 
  119. discover something new and having the stainless steel backbone to 
  120. announce it. Conventional scientific "wisdom" claimed that this 
  121. disease was caused by an unknown virus that took years to 
  122. incubate and become a killer.

  124. Prusiner said, "no." Twenty years of painstaking investigation 
  125. led him to discover that it was a protein far too small to 
  126. contain sufficient DNA to form a gene. As he proved, this protein 
  127. could infect animals and human beings, was inheritable and could 
  128. reproduce itself.

  130. What started out as research of an obscure disease now may have 
  131. some relevancy to killers such as Alzheimers disease, Parkinson's 
  132. disease and Lou Gehrig's disease, which he and his associates are 
  133. investigating.

  135. John Stuart Mills said: "All new ideas have always come from the 
  136. realm of the unorthodox. If all you are going to accept is what 
  137. is already proven, then there is no new discovery. To the extent 
  138. that a society stifles the unorthodox, that society will atrophy 
  139. and die."
